      Dr Non's Digest

A colour is not a property. It is an event between surfaces.

      Read the interval

Sanzo Wada arranged 159 named colours into 348 combinations. The unit is the relationship. Red changes beside blue. Pale yellow changes again when it becomes the smallest part of a quartet.

This edition makes each relationship large enough to inhabit. Search is a question, chance is a method, and the index is the map back out.

      Dr Non's Digest

Natural appetite is a useful way to think about colour. The eye wants tension, rest, temperature, and proportion. Harmony is not sameness. The good pair keeps a small disagreement alive.

      Dr Non's Digest

      Dr Non's Digest

      About / research

      A personal interval

      Red has the appetite.
      Black has the nerve.

My favourite pairing is red and black: classy and dangerous. Red brings heat, appetite, and warning. Black gives it discipline, depth, and somewhere to stop. The attraction is not in either colour alone. It is in the exact point where energy becomes poise.

This is a personal study using the catalogue’s credited digital Red and Black values. It is not presented as one of Wada’s 348 combinations.

      Why I keep looking

Non Arkaraprasertkul is an architect, urban anthropologist, and civic technologist based in Bangkok. His path runs from KMITL and MIT through Oxford and Harvard, ten years of fieldwork in Shanghai, and live municipal systems in Thailand.

Across buildings, cities, software, and colour, the same question returns: how can a complex system become legible without becoming simplistic? Palette is one answer. It turns a historical catalogue into a room for looking slowly, comparing relationships, and testing taste against evidence.

Three practices converge on one test: make complexity legible without making it simple.
How verified colour data becomes an inhabitable, accessible room.

      The research position

This exhibition does not argue that taste is universal. It is a visual research instrument: a way to make historic relationships large, searchable, comparable, and open to disagreement. The digital readings describe this software’s method, not Wada’s intention or the exact appearance of printed ink.
